The Ember of Dawn (Braise de l'Aube)

Traits

Appareance

The Ember of Dawn is a raw opal the size of a hummingbird’s egg, with an uneven and slightly translucent surface. Its core appears to contain an eternal flame, a miniature blaze that ripples and crackles softly beneath the mineral veil. Depending on the angle from which it is viewed, the stone shifts in hue, ranging from an incandescent orange to a deep crimson, sometimes shimmering with golden highlights like the first rays of sunlight piercing the morning mist.

When touched, it is warm but never scorching as long as it remains dormant. However, in moments of tension or when activated, its heat intensifies, and the stone pulses with a fiery glow, casting shifting shadows around it as if it were a fragment of the sun trapped within the material world.

Fine striations run along its surface, resembling cracks left by an ancient fire struggling to break free. Occasionally, tiny sparks flicker across it before vanishing, leaving behind only a subtle golden shimmer.

When brought close to the ear, one can almost hear a distant crackling, the breath of a living flame, as if the stone still carried the energy of the Elemental Plane of Fire. Some wielders even claim that it whispers at times, its voice seeming to be that of fire itself, murmuring words of ignition and rebirth.

History

This artifact was discovered in the city of Ambria by a group of adventurers during the fight against a evil cult. (Go to the story for more info)

The name of this artifact was given by Veronis Loss, the oldest Historian of The Royal Academy of Arcane Mastery of Ambria, The name comes from an ancient tale during the Age of Rifts (3001-3500 AE).

Magical Properties
🔥 Radiant Heat (Passive Effect)

The Ember of Dawn constantly radiates moderate heat within a 30-foot (9-meter) radius, preventing the wielder and adjacent creatures from suffering the effects of natural cold environments (such as tundras or icy caves).

If pressed against a flammable surface for one full round, it ignites the material as if touched by a torch.

☀️ Dawn’s Glow (Passive Effect)

The gem emits a warm golden light equivalent to a powerfull torch (40 feet of bright light, 40 additional feet of dim light).

If placed in an area of magical darkness of level 9 or lower, its glow flickers (minus 30 feet but never fully extinguishes).

By activating this ability as a free action (reaction) when exposed to natural sunlight, the stone’s brightness doubles for 1 minute.

🔥 Flareburst (Activation: 2 actions – Concentration, Elemental, Fire)

(1/day)
The wielder can unleash a burst of searing flames in a 20-foot (6-meter) radius around them. Creatures in the area must make a Reflex save (DC 30):

  • Critical Success: The creature avoids the flames entirely.

  • Success: The creature takes 4d6 fire damage.

  • Failure: The creature takes 8d6 fire damage and catches fire (1d6 persistent fire damage).

  • Critical Failure: The creature takes 16d6 fire damage and catches fire (2d6 persistent fire damage).

☀️ Blessing of the Rising Sun (Activation: 1 action – Concentration, Healing, Light)

(3/day, only at dawn)
If the gem is exposed to the first rays of sunlight, the wielder can absorb a portion of its energy, restoring 4d8+10 HP, as if affected by a 4th-level Heal spell.

If used on a creature that has died within the last minute, it prevents it from rising as an undead for 24 hours.

🔥 Fire’s Embrace (Passive Effect)

The wielder of the Ember of Dawn gains fire immunity and cannot suffer persistent fire damage while carrying it.

Critical Effect (Bane of Darkness and Cold)

If the Ember of Dawn is wielded by a creature devoted to a god of darkness or cold, or by one of Evil anathema, it becomes unstable.

Each day it is used by such a creature, there is a cumulative 5% chance that the gem detonates, unleashing a 300-foot explosion dealing 99d6 fire damage (DC 40 Reflex save (Master) for half) before turning into a lifeless black stone.
